Tazarotene- The Next-Generation Retinoid

What is Tazarotene Used For?

Tazarotene is a heavy hitter in the world of medical-grade skincare. It is particularly effective for:

  • Stubborn Acne: It clears pores and reduces the formation of blackheads and whiteheads more aggressively than most other retinoids.
  • Deep-Set Texture Issues: Ideal for smoothing out significant rough patches and improving the appearance of acne scarring.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Rapidly breaks up stubborn sun damage and post-inflammatory marks

How It Works

Tazarotene is a receptor-selective retinoid. This means it targets specific "pathways" in your skin cells more precisely than older generations of retinoids. By binding to these specific receptors, it:

 1. Normalizes the way your skin cells grow and shed.

 2. Calms inflammation at the source.

 3. Promotes a rapid "fresh start" for your complexion by accelerating the cellular renewal cycle.

Choosing Your Strength

Because tazarotene is highly concentrated and potent, it is typically available in two primary strengths. Our team will guide you on which concentration your skin can thrive with:

 1. 0.05%: The standard starting point for most patients, offering a balance of high-impact results with manageable transition time.

 2. 0.1%: Our most powerful retinoid option. This is generally reserved for patients with resilient skin, severe acne, or those who have "graduated" from lower-strength retinoids.

What to Expect: Side Effects

With great power comes a bit of a "learning curve" for your skin. Tazarotene is highly effective, but it can be more drying than other treatments. During the first few weeks, you may experience:

  •  The "Taz" Flake: Expect noticeable peeling or dryness as your skin transforms.
  • Sensitivity: Your skin may feel more reactive to heat, wind, or touch initially.
  • Initial Purging: If you are prone to acne, you may see a temporary increase in breakouts as the tazarotene clears your pores from the bottom up.
  • Extreme Sun Sensitivity: You must be vigilant with SPF 30+ daily, as tazarotene leaves your fresh, new skin more vulnerable to the sun.

Safety & Contraindications

Due to its high potency and its classification as a Vitamin A derivative, certain safety protocols are mandatory.

Important: Tazarotene should NOT be used if you are:

  • Pregnant (Tazarotene is often contraindicated more strictly than other retinoids).
  • Trying to get pregnant or planning a pregnancy in the near future.
  • Breastfeeding.

If you are currently pregnant or nursing, we offer Azelaic Acid to keep you glowing.
